Megan Smith is an alumnus of Kanab High School. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from Utah State University in 2005, she did two things she swore she would never do—she returned to Kanab and married a local boy, Latimer Smith. Together, they are raising two adventurous and opinionated children, a border collie named Blue, and John Keats—the turtle, not the poet. She has stayed involved with the district over the years though coaching, substituting, and teaching. She is chipping away at a biology teaching degree and is three-quarters of the way to completion. She comes from a long line of educators that include her grandfather, her mother, and four of her eight siblings. She religiously runs at least a mile a day, prefers Star Wars to Star Trek, has a talent for folding fitted sheets, memorizes poetry while she hikes, makes a mean apple crisp, co-founded a 20 person book club, and relaxes by watching pinon jays from her kitchen window while she does dishes. She fears getting off ski lifts, mice, and public speaking. She is a retired marathoner, an avid racquetball player, a compulsive pen collector, and an obsessive list maker. Before she dies, she would like to try out careers in genetics and midwifery, raise chickens, float in a hot air balloon, write a memoir using bullet points, and learn to make bread.
